Equine Therapy

Are you feeling stuck? Have you been frustrated with traditional counseling methods? Want to try something different? Equine therapy, which is counseling with horses, may be just that thing! Clients tell me that being in nature and with the horses is calming and feels nonthreatening. This lets them feel safer to explore their problems and desires.

Horses are prey animals, whose survival is based on the protection given to them by being in a herd. This makes them sensitive to inconsistency, and they can feel this in people. In other words, horses can tell when your insides don’t match your outsides. This enables you to gain instant feedback on your actions, and gives us ample fodder for metaphor. You can learn more about why I use horses and Equine Therapy on this page.

This type of work with horses is experiential and an exciting developing field of counseling. It can also be called Equine Assisted Growth, Equine Assisted Learning, and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy; depending on the form being used. Animal assisted therapy with horses can help with many struggles, including trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and self esteem issues.

No experience with horses is necessary to participate in Equine Therapy. Our work is done unmounted and on the ground. Horseback riding is not generally a part of treatment, but may be incorporated in certain instances.

Children, teenagers, college students and adults all benefit from counseling with horses. It provides a type of engagement and processing not found in office settings. Benefits of equine therapy include heightened confidence, trust, empathy, increased emotional awareness, better impulse control, and improved problem solving skills. Please give me a call today to discuss if equine therapy might be right for you or your child.

I am also available to collaborate with other professionals in the greater Boulder area to use equine therapy as an adjunct to their therapy process. If you are interested, please don’t hesitate to give me a call to discuss your options.
